Can I get a 3 stone diamond ring sized from a 6.5 to 4.5?

My boyfriend and I brought my engagement ring into Kay Jewelers to get it sized to a 4.5 and the manger who was working walked over to the sales woman helping us and told her that it might not be possible then walked away. I started to get worried and upset and I asked the sales woman what would happen if it cannot be resized and she said that they could special order it in my size which will end up costing 2-3 times more than my original ring. My ring is a three stone 1.5 carat diamond white gold ring with 4 diamonds in chanel set down each side. Has anyone else had a problem like this? Will it be possible for my ring to be sized that small? Thanks ahead of time.
